I am currently on part 5 now. I have 2 more episodes to go. From the beginning: I was a little confused on Doppio's character and what was his deal of talking to himself and Diavolo until I later learned that they are two souls in one body and that Doppio was just serving Diavolo. I did think it was a split personality but I was wrong. And I will admit: Diavolo has a pretty sick design and I loved his reveal to Bruno. I was excited at this point when he reveleaed himself to Bruno. He was geniuely very interesting. I was waiting for him to commit abbhorent acts just like Dio and Kira. But then I realized something.
He may have a sick design.
He may have an interesting characteristic trait.
He may have an epic stand, in terms of design and power.
But at the end of the day: he is not a threatening and dangerous villain. I don't know why he is on the "Pure evil" wiki because he doesn't really do anything that serves as a geniuene threat towards the main characters of our story. All he does is just walk around, talking to himself. He's an inconsistently heinous villain at best or even a villainous benchmark.
"But he killed Abbacchio and Narancia!"
First of all: I dislike Narania because he used to be a fun and funny dude until episode 22 ruined him. Even if I don't like Narania: he (& Abbacchio) didn't deserve a brutal and painful death. I think that their death was rushed and undeserved. It was very sad. But killing a few good guys is nothing compared to Dio Brando who ruined Jonathan's life and killed tons of his people inside the mansion with the only survivor being Erina Pendleton. And don't get me started on Yoshikaga Kira who is literally a muderous physopath. His kill count is immeasurable (57 to be exact according to wiki) not to mention how he was willing to take extreme measures just to maintain his "quite life" like abusing his own son etc.
Dio literally threatened multiple generations of Joestar family. And who knew what other bad deeds he also did during his lifetime.
"But he killed his entire family who adopted and raised him!"
Oh please, that's nothing compared to Kira. In all cases, Jojo anime is home to powerful, menacing villains that serve as a threat to the Joestar protagonists. They are all sadistic and heartless. But Diavolo is not one of them.
Another thing that also makes me dislike Diavolo is that he does not have a clear motivation. Dio and Kira all had clear motivations onscreen. Throughout the whole story, I kept on wondering to myself, "Why is he doing this? What is his endgame? What is his motivation?"
"His motivation is to erase traces of his past!"
And?
And?
That's all?
Diavolo is just copy paste of Kira. In fact, if I were to summarize Diavolo: it's basically Kira except decrease the kill count, improve his design and stand, make him more powerful, take away the physopathic characteristics, change the backstory a little and....
BAM!!
You've got Diavolo.
I am not on Part 6: Stone Ocean now because I have just two more episodes to go. I had problems with Golden Wind at first but now, I really love it and appreciate it for being unqiue compared to other parts. And funnily enough, I always try to convince myself, "The gang are not friends. The gang are not friends. They are just teammates." not geniune friends compared to Stardust Crusaders. It was refreshing to see Polnareff back on the show and there were times where part 5 got dark, emotional and a little scary, due to the intense violence that is. It was like a Rollercoaster. I don't know why but Jojo feels so short and quick. I feel like Jojo needs to have more episodes or more parts. Maybe because I am enjoying it too much?
