Have them be a pr*ck most of the time but also show off his sensible side once in awhile. Have their actions- however irrational, be supported by factors of their character. (Trauma? Guilt? Fear of abandonment) When they do something wrong, make effort to show their guilt or apology. However, don't make it all black and white because if you push their mean demeanor too hard and suddenly do a 180, it will be an unnatural transition.
Use subtle hints to suggest your character has some empathy in them. These little crumbs will make their redemption that much more easy to ease into. People that want to hate them will still hate them, but those who accept their new self will grow to like them as a character.
That's... a thing? Why
