Yeah, DIO started the Stands in the Joestar bloodline...
After being stabbed with a Stand Arrow. While he had Jonathan's torso, arms and lower body. Thus awakening Jonathan's Stand. It's not that complicated.
Also no, it's been shown that a Stand user can use the Stands of deceased individuals as long as they possess their bodies. Diavolo was still able to use Epitaph ALONGSIDE King Crimson, even after Doppio was forced out of his body and then promptly killed. It stands to reason that the same should apply to DIO and Jonathan.
Epitaph ISN’T DOPPIOS STAND

Ehhhhhhhhh, Idk.
There's still a real case to be made from modern psychology about dominant personalities in a DID patient and how they work. The mind is split, but the dominant perosnality can often retain memories, experiences and feelings of the other(s) even if the other(s) only retains its own. If two minds = two souls like the Chariot Requiem arc suggests, it's possible that Epitaph is indeed Doppio's Stand.. but that Diavolo, as the dominant personality, actually has control over it.
Epitaph is a “sub-stand”. Think of it like Killer Queens sheer heart attack. It isn’t doppios stand and has nothing to do with him. Epitaph is what let’s diavolo use time erase effectively. He sees a vision and uses time erase.
While not its non-canon, I'd have to say the ending of Eyes of Heaven beats out all the others. Its basically Jotaro doing what he did in part 3, but way worse.
Jotaro: We have the same type of stand right? So....Star Platinum Over Heaven!
Well, it’s less of an asspull considering SC did it first. Jotaro’s stand may as well be the power to copy DIO’s stand through pure contempt for him.

Regardless, Joseph is the asspull character, hands-down.
I love how you say he "lost" the ability but he: Survives a plane crash, Fights off Bastet and Empress (pretty sure that's the one that was one his arm), and is the only one to literally DIE and come back to life...
I meant, he isn't as good as he was in part 2.

In Part 3 I was like:"Meh it's bullshit but I believe it(this is Jojo, so I'm fine)". Eyes Of Heaven:"WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT?!?!
Just imagine doing a group project with your friend. Your friend says that he doesn’t really care about the grade or anything and slacks off. You, however, DO care about the grade and spend 2 weeks researching and doing all the work by yourself. The day of the presentation comes and you and your partner walk up. You do the entire speech by yourself while your partner stands there trying to look relevant. You’re super nervous In front of huge crowds though so you stutter and look away a lot. It gets to the last slide and your partner says “The End”. Then you finally get the grades back and your partner gets top grades in all categories while you get a bad grade in presenting. THAT’S BASICALLY WHAT HAPPENED TO DIO
