It was New Year, around 20 years ago. My grandfather and I went to the cemetery to steal "takenohanasashi".* My grandfather then broke them into long, thin sticks and made me a 60cm kite. On the front of the kite, he painted in ink the character for "fly" (飛). The kite flew up high on a strong wind and so I had a lot of respect for my grandfather.
Take care always, Grandpa!
Takenohanasashi is a type of bamboo "vase" for putting flowers into found in cemeteries. These days they are usually plastic or ceramic.
