Yoshikage Kira Wants a Quiet Life (吉良吉影は静かに暮らしたい Kira Yoshikage wa Shizuka ni Kurashitai) is the fourteenth story arc in Part IV: Diamond Is Unbreakable. This arc introduces the main antagonist of Part IV, Yoshikage Kira.

Summary

In this arc, we're properly introduced to Yoshikage Kira, who had appeared earlier in Chapter 334. He is seen taking a trip to the St. Gentleman's sandwich store with the severed hand of another woman resting in the inner pocket of his suit's coat, chatting with it as if it was a living 'girlfriend' and even bringing it out to prod sandwiches whilst holding a conversation. After buying a sandwich and going to the park for his lunch, mainly to admire the sky, he notes that the hand is starting to decay and makes plans to replace 'her' later. However, Kira's startled by a dog, looking for food, causing him to drop the hand off in the lunch bag his sandwich came with. Relieved, Kira chases the dog off and resumes his lunch, leaving his 'girlfriend' in the bag.

Just behind Kira, Shigekiyo "Shigechi" Yangu comes to the park as well, having bought his own sandwich from St. Gentleman's earlier, and he meets up with Josuke Higashikata and Okuyasu Nijimura. The protagonists immediately attempt to get a thousand yen out of Shigechi, and when the boy agrees Shigechi attempts to write their names down in a notebook as a tab. As Josuke and Okuyasu leave and Shigechi struggles to remember how to spell their names, the dog Kira scared off returns and steals the unprotected lunch. Noticing his lunch is gone, Shigechi spots Kira's bag and, without hesitation, grabs it in mistake of his own. By the time Kira notices this, it's too late to call out to Shigechi. Due to the fact that the recent 'girlfriend' had on her a ring Kira bought, Kira believes that upon finding the hand, Shigechi would pass it onto the police. As such, he follows Shigechi in order to prevent his 15 year record of never leaving behind evidence from being broken - his plan, however, is to simply steal the bag back, rather than do anything to it or Shigechi.

Shigechi runs into Josuke and Okuyasu again near St. Gentleman's, with the high schoolers complaining about how all the sandwiches have been sold out. Shigechi offers to sell "his" sandwich for 10,000 yen, an offer the heroes reject, and he then suggests eating lunch in his middle school's gym storage room (as the teachers sneak in coffee and tea there). When this offer is also rejected due to the implications of stealing from the teachers, Josuke and Okuyasu leave once more to find somewhere to eat. Shigechi then turns around, only to literally run into Kira. Before Kira can claim his 'girlfriend' back, Shigechi apologizes and runs off to have lunch in the gym storage room, leaving Kira panicking in front of the school.

Shigechi makes it to the storage room, followed shortly afterwards by a glove-wearing Kira. As he's about to open the bag, Shigechi remembers to make some coffee and leaves the bag behind, giving Kira the opportunity to take his 'girlfriend' back. However, Josuke and Okuyasu reappear again, having decided to have lunch anyway with Shigechi. Kira hides for cover within the nearby vaulting boxes, but the one he chose to hide in quickly becomes a seat for Josuke. As he panics, Kira finds a rather convenient coat hanger by his shoes, which he crafts into a rod to pull at and pick up the sandwich bag. Unfortunately for him, though, the sticker that has been sealing the bag loses its adhesiveness and falls from the rod, opening up and revealing the hand. On the bright side, although it attracted the attention of both Josuke and Okuyasu, the bag has opened up away from the group.

Josuke jumps off the box and goes to pick up the bag, only to be stopped by Shigechi. Shigechi makes the assumption that Josuke was going to mooch, despite both high schoolers stating that the bag made a noise and they were simply investigating. They all turn away from the bag to get tea, giving Kira the chance to quickly claim his 'girlfriend' back. When Shigechi comes back with the tea, he immediately notices his sandwich is missing and, once more, accuses Josuke of stealing it. When no one admits to stealing it, Shigechi sends out his Stand, Harvest - something Kira doesn't notice and is confused about - but before Shigechi can reveal Kira, the gym teacher returns and chases the three boys out.

Slipping out undetected, Kira begins to walk home in pride. However, Harvest alerts Shiechi of the "thief" and meets up with Kira, angrily asking what a stranger is doing with his lunch bag. When Kira attempts to bluff his way out, Shigechi uses Harvest to pull on the bag, eventually ripping it open and allowing its contents, the severed hand, to fall to the ground. With the evidence revealed, Kira sterns and realizes Shigechi and he share the same abilities, something that alarms Shigechi. Kira then asks if Josuke and Okuyasu share the same abilities while reaching down to claim his 'girlfriend' back, resulting in Harvest readying to swarm Kira and Shigechi threatening to attack if he moves.

Kira stands up straight and begins to narrate his lifestyle to Shigechi, an action that Kira claims to be calming. He then uses it to jump immediately into his own reasons for fighting back: to secure a "peaceful life". He reveals his Stand, Killer Queen, and threatens to erase Shigechi, but Harvest then swarms and grabs Kira's throat, ready to gouge his neck. When Shigechi boasts about Killer Queen's short range falling to Harvest, Kira reveals a 100 yen coin, which Shigechi grabs from him using a Harvest. Kira then reveals the main ability of Killer Queen, creating bombs, and detonates the coin right by his opponent's face.

Seeing Shigechi is still alive, Kira explains both his powers and the injuries the child had received due to Killer Queen's bomb. Then, using this as an opportunity, Kira attempts to probe for more information on Josuke and Okuyasu in order to find out whether or not they have Stand abilities themselves. As Shigechi hesitates, Kira then threatens to kill his parents as well and says he'll spare them if Shigechi tells about their abilities. Realizing he may be the serial killer Reimi Sugimoto was killed by, Shigechi escapes and crawls back into the school in order to find his friends and save his parents. But, just as Shigechi finds Josuke, Kira catches up to him and detonates Shigechi, killing him off before his secrets can be revealed.

Kira leaves the school, unaware that a Harvest had managed to grab and take off one of the buttons of his coat. This Harvest drone manages to present the button to Josuke and Okuyasu before exploding, alerting the heroes of Shigechi's demise.

Trivia

  • This arc is the second time a main villain has been revealed halfway through a Part, the first time being with Kars.
  • This is the first time we learn an extensive amount about a character through dialog alone that isn't drawn from a character profile; this is a reoccurring theme with Kira. From the fourth chapter, we learn Kira's age, the location of his home, where he works, when he gets up in the morning and when he returns home, personal habits, and nightly rituals. We also learn in the first chapter what his coworkers think of him and through the first three chapters that he has been operating for 15 years.

Trivia

  • This part is notable for taking place in a fictional setting, without traveling to any real locations.
  • Leaving the Tarot and Egyptian mythology in Part 3, Part 4 primarily references popular (rock) music in its names.
  • Araki states that it is possible that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure could have ended with Part 3 since the resurrection of DIO was the last plot element of precedent.[3]
  • The title of this arc was formerly translated as Diamond Is Not Crash.[citation needed]
  • This part is notable for having one of the most drastic changes in art style as it progressed. At its inception, it took on the muscular, Fist of the North StarFW inspired look that was present in the previous three parts. Around the middle of the part, the various characters took on a more youthful appearance, particularly in the case of Josuke and Koichi. By the end of Diamond is Unbreakable, the manga adopted the glamorous art style in which characters go from very muscular to athletic that would define the visual presentation of Vento Aureo and Stone Ocean.
